MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Alabama is trying to liven up its state parks with adventure sports.
The state is seeking proposals from companies and individuals to build and operate attractions like zip lines and canopy tours inside 10 state parks.
An adventure sports operation opened in 2013 at Gulf State Park with zip lines, paddle boards and kayaks. Leaders now want to try similar attractions at other parks.
The state is looking to add attraction at parks including Joe Wheeler at Decatur; Huntsville’s Monte Sano; Guntersville; DeSoto in DeKalb County; Lake Lurleen near Tuscaloosa; and Cheaha in east Alabama.
Other potential sites include Oak Mountain at Pelham; Wind Creek on Lake Martin; Chewacla near Auburn; and Lakepoint, located near Eufaula.
Those parks and Gulf State draw some 4 million visits annually.
