Pros and cons of different diets

There are plenty of different diets out there, but which one is right for you? Dr. Richard Snellgrove with Eastern Shore Weight Loss stopped by Studio 10 to talk about some of the most popular diet plans.

Here are some of the pros and cons Dr. Snellgrove talks about:

Weight Watchers: Weight Watchers uses community support networks to help motivate people to succeed.  The program includes nutrition education and portion control.  They do require that you weigh in each week which can be intimidating for some people.  It’s also not as structured as other diet plans.  The education provides a good outline, but it’s up to you to make the right choices.

Atkins: The Atkins Diet is a high protein, low carb and based on the idea that carbs easily lead to weight gain and therefore should be consumed less.  Atkins is very popular because you see results quickly.  You also typically increase your levels of “good” cholesterol.  Research has shown that many people do not stick with the Atkins diet for long.  People on the diet have also reported low energy and trouble focusing. 

Mediterranean Diet: The Mediterranean Diet has been approved by the American Heart Association and focuses on what you can eat: fruits, veggies, nuts, whole grains, seeds, legumes, seafood and olive oil.  It lowers the risk of heart disease and cancer.  It’s complicated because it never states exactly how much of each ingredient you should have each day.
