Mobilians and visitors got an early start to Carnival Season Friday, January 31, moving into RV City just in time for Super Bowl Sunday.

Many who moved in early were there to honor Chief Warrant Officer Tom Reed, who retired from the Coast Guard Friday.

“[Tom is] the best,” said colleague AMT1 Danny McKinney.  “[He's a] good leader, very knowledgeable, you can’t do anything better.”

“We’re just having a good time, and just trying to give him a good send-off,” McKinney added.  “What else can you do for a man that served for 30 years in the United States Coast Guard?”

CWO Reed was both moved and humbled by the showing, dozens there to celebrate his service.

“I’m not worthy of these people, that’s for sure,” Reed said.  “But it was a great career and this is a great group of people, and I appreciate it.”

With Fat Tuesday just over a month away (March 4), organizers like Peggy Jimenez are getting ready.  Jimenez says all by five of the nearly 200 RV spots are sold.

“We’re real excited this year,” Jimenez said.  “I know it’s going to be cold, but hey we’ve got a burn barrels ready to go and we’re ready to stay warm and have a good time.”
