The Alabama Department of Transportation Southwest Region has begun spreading salt brine and/or rock salt on the interstates in anticipation of forecasted winter weather.

“We have enough salt brine and rock salt to cover the right lane in both directions on Interstate 65 from the start at Interstate 10 to just north of Evergreen and on I-10 from the Mississippi state line to the Florida state line,” said Vince Calametti, Southwest Region Engineer for ALDOT.

Additionally the right lane of the Cochrane-Africatown Bridge and I-165 will be treated.

The salt brine and rock salt was delivered early this morning from ALDOT crews out of Huntsville.

“We are taking precautions for those that have to be on the roads,” Calametti said. “But we strongly encourage everyone to stay home if at all possible.”
