Authorities are trying to identify a suspect in the theft of a laptop in a Walmart in Daphne.

Angela Crawford, the 65-year-old victim of the crime, said this may be the first time she’s owned a laptop but it’s one she’s had to purchase twice.

It’s all thanks to a not-so-helpful stranger who, authorities sad, found the first one she bought and took it for his own.

Authorities said surveillance video shows the suspect leave the store and walk into the parking lot around 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

That’s just minutes after Crawford and her husband finished shopping and drove off. They took all their items with them, except for the laptop which they left in the cart.

“It was a present from my son for Christmas and my birthday. It was quite a lot of money. It cost $490. I was very excited,” said Crawford.

In the video, you can see the suspect notice the laptop, which was still in the box. He walks to the shopping cart, snatches it and calmly walks away.

“Unfortunately, I had been recovering from an illness and I was not really thinking. To find out we left it and then somebody had taken it, it was quite a blow. I was very depressed,” Crawford said.

Daphne Police said the suspect is now facing third degree theft charges.

“It’s pretty lowdown for someone to do this. Obviously, it’s someone lacking integrity. We can say that and we’re hoping we can get him identified,” said Cpl. Jason Vannoy.

Crawford said she’s stunned by the crime.

“That was just an opportunity for him to do the right thing and to do unto others like the Golden Rule. He didn’t and I feel sorry for that person,” Crawford said.

Authorities said the suspect is a white male with dark hair in his 40′s or 50′s. He’s facing third degree theft of property charges.
