Officials said just before 2 p.m. Friday, January 17, an elderly couple from Pennsylvania was struck from behind by a truck while cycling down Fort Morgan Road in Gulf Shores.
Officials said 72-year-old Robert Whitten of North East, Pa., was taken by life-flight to a hospital where he was last listed in serious condition. His wife, 71-year-old Phyllis Whitten, was taken by ambulance to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Police said the driver who hit the couple is 33-year-old Jeremy Jellison of Gulf Shores. No charges have yet been brought against Jellison, and police say an investigation to the collision is ongoing.
Police said ultimately, a case will be presented to a grand jury.
Lee Cossette, Captain of the Fort Morgan Volunteer Fire department who assisted in the life-flight operation, says one of the volunteers from his station just so happened to be passing through the area at the time of the collision.
He was the first man on scene to help the injured couple.
“He worked with the individual that was later pronounced dead, he began CPR on that individual,” said Cossette.
And, others who enjoy the bike path agree.
“This is a very busy highway,” said Karen Suhre, who enjoys Fort Morgan Bike Path, “from riding on the bike path, you can see how busy it is.”
The couple was vacationing in the area until March.
